Scholarship
application forms for each year are usually available in December,
with the application deadline being on April 15th. When application
forms are available they will be posted on this web site. At other
times, please join our e-mail list and we will notify you when the
applications become available.
Every
year since 1998, the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority has awarded
a Pilot Training Scholarship. It is an objective of the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority (Authority) to recognize, encourage and support excellence in our region's young men and women pursuing knowledge and skills for a lifetime of work or pleasure in the field of aviation. To this end, the Authority is offering one scholarship to provide for up to $3,000 of flight and ground training to prepare one student pilot to complete solo flight. Award of this scholarship will be based upon merit - not need.
Basic
Eligibility Requirements:
To
be eligible for award of this scholarship, the applicant:
- Must
be enrolled in High School or equivalent.
- Must
be at least age 16 and no older than age 19 on April 1 of the year
the Scholarship is awarded (under age 18 must have parental/guardian
approval to apply).
- Must
be a full-time resident of Alcona County or Iosco County, Michigan.
- Must
be able to meet the standards of a FAA Third Class Medical Certificate.
- Immediate
family members, dependents and all others living in the same household
with any Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority Board Member and/or
Employee are not eligible.
Application
Requirements:
- Complete
the Application form and the Authorization for Release of Information:
School Transcript, Discipline and Attendance Reports, and return
these to the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority no later than the
application deadline. Students under age 18 must have the approval
of their parent or guardian.
- Schedule
and complete an interview with the County Commissioner representing
your district. At the interview give the attached Statement of Recommendation
form to your Commissioner. The Commissioner will complete and return
this form directly to the Authority. Be sure to schedule your interview
in advance of the application deadline to allow your commissioner
time to return the recommendation to the Authority. To schedule

Evaluation
Criteria:
The
following items will be evaluated by the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport
Authority's Scholarship Selection Committee
- Completeness,
accuracy and legibility of application.
- County
Commissioner's Recommendation.
- School academic and attendance performance indicative of applicant's
likelihood to successfully complete training requirements.
- School
discipline record indicative of applicant=s likelihood to operate
an aircraft safely and in accordance with aviation rules and regulations.
- Probability
of applicant to continue aviation interest for work or pleasure.
Selection
Process:
The
Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority's Selection Committee will score
all applications. The highest ranking applicants will be invited
to interview with the selection committee. Based on the results
of the interview, the selection committee will recommend one applicant,
along with an alternate, to the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority
Board of Directors for award of the flight scholarship. The award
will be determined at the Authority's Regular Meeting on the third
Thursday of May. In the event the primary applicant is unable to
meet the requirements of the FAA Third Class Medical Certificate,
award of the scholarship will transfer to the alternate. The Authority
reserves the right to not award this scholarship if, in its opinion,
there are insufficient qualified applicants.
Allowable
Scholarship Expenses:
- FAA
Third Class Medical Examination (To be scheduled by Authority).
- Aircraft
rental through Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Services, Inc.
- Flight
instruction through Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Services, Inc.
- Ground
instruction through Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Services, Inc.
- Pilot
Log Book (To be provided by Authority).
- Student
Pilot Training Materials (To be provided by Authority).
Responsibilities
of Scholarship Recipient:
- Make
and keep all flying and ground instruction appointments. If an appointment
must be broken, notify the instructor at least twelve (12) hours
in advance. A penalty fee could be charged by Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport
Services, Inc., for broken appointments and would have to be paid
by the scholarship recipient. Payment of penalties is not an allowable
scholarship expense. If an appointment problem persists, the Scholarship
could be forfeited at the discretion of the Authority.
- Schedule
flight training hours so as to complete training in a reasonable
time. The Scholarship is limited to a six month term.
- Payment
for all allowable scholarship expenses will be made directly by
the Authority. Payment will not be made for any unused expenses
if the recipient cannot finish or quits training.
- Recipient
and his/her parent and/or guardian will be required to execute a
Scholarship Acceptance Agreement, including a Release of Liability,
Release of Medical Information, and authorization to use the recipient's
name and likeness in Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport promotional material.
Oscoda-Wurtsmith
Airport Authority, shall not discriminate as it relates to any applicant,
on the grounds of race, color, religion, sex, age, handicap, or
national origin, as it relates to all purposes to which this scholarship
is intended.
The Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority reserves the right to withdraw
its offer of this Scholarship at any time, and for any reason. If
