Improvements and Construction
During
the summer of 2002 the Airport is planning several significant construction
projects with an approximate cost of $4.5 Million. These include:
Rehabilitation
of Runway 6/24;
Rehabilitation of Taxiways A, B and C;
Rehabilitation of airfield lighting systems;
Installation of additional security fencing;
Installation of Runway 6 Instrument Landing System, MALSAR;
Installation of PAPI both ends of runway.
Due
to the extensive work to be accomplished on the runway, the runway
will be closed for about 60 days this summer. During that time,
a portion of the parallel taxiway will be converted into a temporary
day/night visual approach runway, approximately 6000' x 75'. The
anticipated time frame for the main runway closure is all of July
and August 2002.
Once
the runway work is completed and the runway is reopened, the Taxiways
A, B and C will be closed for approximately 60 days (September and
October).
Installation
of the new Instrument Landing System is expected to take place in
2003. Once the new ILS is operational, the existing ILS/DME approach
to Runway 24 will be terminated.
As
always, but especially this summer, check NOTAMs before flying into
the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport.
